It has many uses and benefits such as a gelatin substitute and thicken or add texture to foods. Konjac has been used in traditional medicine and it is best known for its use as a dietary supplement for weight loss and cholesterol management.

The European commission for nutrition and health claim have granted the following claims with regards to “Glucomannan”:

How does Glucomannan Work?

Glucomannan works by absorbing water in the stomach to form a viscous, gel-like mass in the stomach when hydrated. This delays gastric emptying and induces satiety leading to a decrease in subsequent energy intake (amount of room in the stomach for food) and helps reduce bloating. It also is non-digestible in the human small intestine. Glucomannan is a very low in calories.

These properties can be observed even if you add a small amount of glucomannan to a glass of water, it will absorb it and turn into a gel.

Glucomannan is very low in calories and the very viscous property demonstrated that is not present in other fibers is one of the key factors that make it very effective in weight loss compared to its competitors.

However, it is important to understand that although you may observe weight loss by adding glucomannan to your diet. The results are observed when used in combination with exercise and healthy lifestyle changes.

Glucomannan also helps to reduce cholesterol concentration in the body, this is believed to be due to its viscous property. It is believed that it reduces the reabsorption of bile acids, increasing the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol, reducing the circulating cholesterol concentration. Which it also seems to be similar characteristics of other soluble viscous fiber.

How to take Glucomannan?

As stated by the European commission it is ideal to take 1 gram, three times a day usually at least 30 minutes before the main meal. Supplemented with at least 1-2 glasses of water.
